Residents asked to conserve energy starting Friday evening

The California Independent System Operator is calling on residents to save energy on Friday, fearing extreme temperatures and a shortage of the state’s power grid.

According to Cal-ISO, which manages the state’s power grid, state-wide Flex Alerts will be effective Friday from 4 pm to 9 pm.

According to Cal-ISO, residents are required to keep the thermostat above 78 degrees, turn off unnecessary lights, and avoid using major appliances when flex alerts are enabled. During the previous Flex Alerts summoned in June and the heat wave of last summer, the agency said consumers “collectively reduced their energy consumption significantly.”

“This allowed grid operators to avoid or limit rotational power outages that may be required when power demand exceeds capacity,” Cal-ISO said in a news release.

Prior to the warning, residents are encouraged to take several steps to control their energy use. They include:

  • Use major appliances early in the day.
  • Precooling the house by lowering the thermostat;
  • Close the window covers to maintain a cooler room temperature.And
  • If available, use solar power to charge the device.
