Rescue crews look for drowned teen in Mission Beach –

SAN DIEGO (COUSSI) – The U.S. Coast Guard has teamed up with lifeguards in search of a teenage boy who could have drowned at Mission Beach, emergency services said Wednesday.

KUSI’s Elizabeth Alvarez was in Mission Beach for more details on her recovery efforts.

Recovery efforts continued from 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday for a boy in his teens who sank and never came to the surface again, according to the San Diego Fire & Rescue Department.

Around 3:30 p.m., a lifeguard called for a backup after spotting a swimmer who appeared to be in agony between a group in an area near Jersey Court. Two unknown teenagers were rescued, but the victim did not come to the surface, according to Monica Munoz, SDFD liaison officer. The department sent a helicopter and other floating boats to help search for the missing boy.

After more than an hour of searching, the incident was considered a recovery attempt, Munoz said.

Around 7:30 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard deployed services – including a helicopter and a cutter – to search for the victim.

“The recovery effort will continue until the sun sets on Tuesday,” Munoz said. “The lifeguards will meet again on Wednesday morning.”
