The 152-year-old church will host services on its 11-acre campus on Garey Avenue on Sunday, April 17, something that has not happened since 1996, according to Tina Tong, the church’s worship producer.
Before 2020, the Church of Purpose held the annual Easter service for more than 10,000 people at Fairplex in Pomona. Coronavirus precautions changed everything, and last year services were held outside the church.
However, this break in practice allowed the church to modernize its campus, including its 35-year-old worship center, which received a $ 1.7 million renovation. Highlights include the installation of a 40-foot LED wall, the replacement of traditional benches with theater seats, the addition of safety features and the expansion of the choir and orchestra loft.
The face construction was completed in seven months, exactly at the time of the “Easter return home,” Tong said.
“It’s been a long time,” Tong said by telephone on Monday. “We look forward to welcoming people again.”
Three identical worship services will be held at 8:30, 10, and 11:30 a.m. Sunday with the theme “Easter on Purpose.”
“Celebrating Easter with members from the local community is one of the most meaningful things I have achieved, especially at this time when our world needs an extra dose of hope and joy,” Senior Pastor Glenn Gunderson said in a press release.
After worship, the church will host an outdoor festival with local artists, baptisms and cafes.
The church is at 601 N. Garey Ave. Admission and parking are free. Nursery care will also be available for those attending the 10:30 and 11:30 am services.
A live broadcast will be available online at GoalKisha.com.
