President Biden attends Memorial Day wreath-laying

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and other officials will attend the wreath-laying ceremony on Monday at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery.

This weekend marks the 15th anniversary of National Remembrance Day in National Cemeteries. City Memorial Day events were reduced to national cemeteries in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19.

All VA National Cemeteries are open on Memorial Day weekend from morning to dusk. Volunteers placed small American flags in front of memorial graves on veterans’ graves in the days leading up to Memorial Day, the Department of Veterans Affairs said.

At Arlington Cemetery, 228,000 small American flags are placed with each tombstone for Remembrance Day.

“There’s no better place to reflect on the service and sacrifice of American Veterans and fellow workers than in a national cemetery,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. “Here are those who have served, sacrificed and, in many cases, given their lives for us and our people. We are forever in debt.”
