A popular California safari park that has been decertified

A popular wildlife sanctuary in the San Francisco Bay Area has been decertified by the Zoos and Aquarium Association for concerns about the facility’s animal care. The association, also known as AZA, announced this week that it would reject the “gold.” SF Gate, the standard certification for Santa Rosa’s Safari West, reported on Friday. “The Commission has noted serious concerns about veterinary practices and care, and the acquisition and disposal of animals,” said Dan Ash, president of the association, in a statement. “I hope Safari West owners and leaders take these issues seriously.” KTV U-TV reported Thursday that Safari West was appealing for a decision. Executive Director Keo Hornbostel said its operations have changed little over the decades since it first received AZA certification. “Some of the information provided is not accurate,” Hornbostel told the news station. “It’s not at all true to jeopardize the care of a veterinarian.” After the appeal was filed, the AZA committee has 45 days to change its mind. If the refusal is upheld, the association said Safari West could reapply in September next year.
