Racist painting allegedly given to black student files lawsuit against California school district

Some Inland Empire parents have filed a lawsuit against the Upland Unified School District. The racist painting was allegedly handed to a black student starting in sixth grade. At Peppertree Elementary School.

One of the paintings reads “You are my favorite monkey” and another reads “To my favorite cotton picker”.

Marlene Reynoso, the mother of the student who received the paintings, told KTLA that she pulled her daughter out of school after continued harassment from her classmates.

At a news conference on Monday, details of a lawsuit calling for the attorney general to initiate a formal investigation into the school were announced, along with the dismissal of the assistant principal and teacher at Peppertree Elementary School.

Parents also allege that the Upland Unified School District took little action and that the district’s response should have been quicker.

Cochrane Law Firm attorney James Bryant said at a news conference Monday:

  • This photo, provided to KTLA, shows a racist drawing allegedly given to a black student by a sixth grader.

At a press conference, Reinoso said, “Principal, we haven’t heard from management, we haven’t really heard from you…and that’s how we got to this point.”

The school district has a strict zero-tolerance policy against hate speech and harassment of any kind, and said an investigation was immediately conducted.
