REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (AP) — More than 20 years after a woman’s body was found at a construction site near Los Angeles, police have identified her as the mother who had last been in contact with the family in 1981.
Redondo Beach Police said in a statement Friday that the remains of Katherine Parker-Johnson were identified earlier this year through DNA comparisons with her daughter and sister.
The statement said her family last had contact with Parker Johnson in the Lenox area of Los Angeles in May 1981. Police say she has not received a missing person report.
The body was found on August 29, 2001 during a construction project in a residential area of Redondo Beach. Police said they conducted an investigation at the time but were unable to identify the body.
A homicide investigation into Parker Johnson’s death is currently active, according to people familiar with the matter.
Additional details were not immediately available. Police have scheduled a press conference for Monday morning to discuss the incident and ask for the public’s cooperation.
