Police identify suspect accused of stabbing teen at Fresno’s Fashion Fair Mall

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Fresno police say they have arrested a gang member after stabbing a boy inside the Fashion Fair Mall on Saturday night.

Authorities identified the suspect as the 27-year-old Prophet Hillard during a news conference Monday.

Officials say shortly before 6:30 a.m. Saturday, police responded to reports of a scuffle at the mall. When police arrived, they found two boys – a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old – involved.

One had a knife wound to the armpit and the other was hit in the back of the head by an unknown object.

Both were taken to hospital.

The surveillance video showed the two minors in a verbal argument with the suspect, who became physical.

Police located Hillard in a bathroom inside the mall. A knife was also found.

On Monday, Mayor Paco Balderrama and Mayor Jerry Dyer promised to consider possible policy changes at the mall.

“I happen to believe that if you are a known gang member and you are there to create problems, then you should not be allowed to enter the mall. I believe that, and I think it should be a store policy. “Also believe that if you get involved in any kind of upset, then you should be asked to leave,” Balderrama said.

The Balderrama chief says he is going to ask the merchant to hire three officers from the town of Fresno during peak hours and on weekends.

Police say the mall has not closed and is safe for visitors.
Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer tweeted about the incident, saying he was “extremely disturbed” by the escalation of violence at the mall and that he would work with Fresno Police Chief Paco Balderrama and Council member Tyler Maxwell. , representing the area, to develop a security plan for the mall.

“People should be able to enjoy their shopping experience and not worry about such incidents,” he wrote.

Action News spoke with Maxwell, who represents the Fashion Fair area.

“We will do everything in our power to address the escalation of violence at the Fashion Fair Mall. Next week, I will meet with the mayor, the mayor and the management of the mall to discuss the next steps,” he said. .

Shoppers can expect an increased police presence at the mall in the coming days, including detectives with the Multi Agency Gang Consortium or MAGEC.
The Fashion Fair Mall has become the site of many violent incidents in the last two years.
