Police identify 88-year-old killed in possible burglary at Rolando veterinary clinic

The 88-year-old man who was killed in an apparent burglary attempt last week was a beloved San Diego vet who cared for the families’ pets for decades.

Police identified the victim Sunday as Clark Kelly, who was a veterinarian at the Boulevard Animal Clinic on El Cajon Avenue in Rolando.

Kelly was “just the kindest, kindest vet you could ask for,” said Susan Hopps-Tatum, whose family has been taking pets to Kelly for more than three decades.

Customers said Kelly Clinic was a small family-friendly business and a key element in the community serving generations of family pets.

Those who knew Kelly created a monument with handwritten notes, flowers and pictures of their pets on the fence with the chain link that surrounded the single-storey clinic. One note read: “Thank you for your care and kindness to the generations of pets” and another wrote: “You were a special beacon of light for our community.”

Kelly was sweet-spoken and friendly and had a way with animals where he could make nervous pets feel comfortable, Hopps-Tatum said.

Kelly was the kind of vet who would remember your pets’ names and call you if you had any questions, said Lydia Krasner and Eliana Krasner’s daughter, whose family had taken the six boxers and five cats. to Kelly during the 30s.

The Krasner family said they were shocked to hear that Kelly had been killed.

“I just think it was an absurd act and he will really miss the community because he was an amazing person,” said Lydia Krasner.

Homicide Lieutenant Steve Shebloski said Kelly called police Wednesday afternoon to say she thought someone had broken into his clinic. Investigators believe Kelly got into a fight with the intruder and suffered multiple injuries, including a head injury. Kelly died after being taken to a nearby hospital.

An anxious citizen had kept a man outside the clinic before police arrived. Patrick O’Brien, a 37-year-old San Diego resident, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held without bail in the county jail.
