Police arrest 3rd and 4th suspects in 2021 fatal shooting near Emerald Hills park

Detectives on Thursday arrested two more suspects — one in Santee after a vehicle pursuit on state Route 52 and one in Riverside County — in connection with the death of a woman last year near Emerald Hills Park, San Diego police said Friday.

With the additional arrests, homicide detectives have now arrested four men in connection with May 2021 murder of Tamara Dorena Shellum44, who was living in her car near Emerald Hills Community Park when she was fatally shot.

Those arrested this week were Jaylen Lemonte Thomas, 19, of San Diego, and Lloyd Dozier, 22, of Spring Valley. Both were being held Thursday at the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder and robbery, while Thomas, who reportedly ran from police before crashing in Santee, also faced charges related to the chase. The robbery charges stemmed from an incident in March at Las Americas Mall in San Ysidro, police said.

Prosecutors have already charged two other men in connection with Shellum’s death. Kenneth Earl Brooks, 21, was he was arrested just weeks after the murderwhile Michael Ulysses Cunningham, 20, was was arrested last month.

Prosecutors also charged Brooks with murder in a previous fatal shooting in Emerald Hills. Police and prosecutors said Brooks was a member of a gang and did not know his victims.

Firefighters found Shellum shot to death on May 9, 2021, inside her Chevrolet Monte Carlo parked on Bethune Court near the park entrance. Around 10:30 that morning, someone asked San Diego firefighters, who happened to be at the park, to check on a woman in the car. As they approached they noticed bullet holes in the windshield and saw Shellum dead.

Homicide detectives later learned that the shooting was reported at the park around 11:30 p.m. the night before. Police said officers responded to the area but were unable to locate anything.

Detectives arrested Brooks about two weeks after Shellum’s death when they pulled over a car he was riding in. Cunningham was arrested last month, initially on unrelated weapons charges. While still in custody, detectives arrested him in connection with Shellum’s death.

On Thursday morning, police tracked Thomas down to Linda Vista, believing him to be a suspect in both the homicide and a robbery earlier this year at an H&M clothing store in San Ysidro, San Diego police Lt. Steve Sembloski said , in a press release. When officers tried to pull over Thomas’ car, he sped away.

Thomas ended up on eastbound SR-52, but the pursuit ended when he lost control of his Nissan Sentra and crashed into the concrete center divider, Shebloski said. Thomas was not injured in the collision and police took him into custody without further incident. Officers later found a loaded 9 mm handgun in the car.

Paramedics evaluated and extricated a 20-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car, Shebloski said.

Around the same time as the pursuit and arrest, Riverside County law enforcement officers raided a Temecula home and arrested Dozier, Sembloski said. A search of that home turned up “hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a 9mm pistol and an assault rifle.”
