WNBA champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist Britney Greener is still in custody after the Russian Federal Customs Service found cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow airport a month ago. Greener is under investigation for “large-scale drug trafficking,” a crime that could lead to a ten-year sentence in Russia.
Since then, congressmen have been fighting for Griner’s return to the United States, including Texas Sheila Jackson Lee. On March 5, Lee insisted that Russia release Griner; the crime for which she was arrested is not a crime in the United States.
“Britney Greener is a citizen of the United States, she was a guest in Russia, and I will push for her release,” Lee said. “I just talked to the State Department to try to get them to focus on its circumstances.”
The US embassy requested consular access, but they were denied for three weeks.
Texas Congressman Colin Allred noted that taking Griner out of Russia was “complicated”; relations between the United States and Russia are strained, and their war against Ukraine further strains their relationship.
“Russia’s criminal justice system is very different from ours, very opaque,” Alred said. “We have little idea where she is in this process at the moment, but she has been detained for three weeks now and that is extremely worrying.”
According to Allred, Griner was in contact with her Russian lawyer, who is in contact with her agent and family members.
“So we know she’s fine,” Allred said.
The two-time WNBA Defender of the Year also plays for the Russian club UMMC Ekaterinburg. Many WNBA players compete abroad to supplement their pay. The WNBA’s seasonal salary for veteran players is about $ 200,000, while overseas teams offer players more. For example, Greener won $ 1 million to participate in UMMC Ekaterinburg, but won $ 215,000 during his 2020-2021 season with Mercury.
Griner Cherryl’s wife expressed her feelings on social media.
“People say ‘be busy.’ Still, there is no task in this world to stop any of us from worrying about you. “My heart, our hearts skip every day,” Cherry said. “There are no words to express this pain. It hurts, it hurts us. “
Greener is a native of Houston, Texas, and helped Baylor win the national championship in 2012. She became the first overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft won by Phoenix Mercury. She, along with WNBA icon Diana Taurazi and Candice Dupree, played a key role in winning Mercury in the 2014 WNBA Championship. Griner is a six-time WNBA star.
