New discoveries about the impact of stress on memory suggest that people tend to remember better information when information relates to stressful situations.

However, the significance of delay – that is, the time lag between a critical event and learning – does not appear to have a significant impact on the relationship between anxiety and memory as previously thought.

Grant Shields, lead author of a study published in “The process of severe stress on memory recording is complex.” Learning & Remembering. “Our work has shown that the relevance of information to a concerned person appears to play an important role in the impact of the concern on concealment.”

Shields is an assistant professor of anthropology at Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences in the U of A. ways of understanding.

Shield and co-authors Colton Hunter, a doctoral student in psychology at the U of A, and Andrew Yonelinas, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, try to remember 130 young people through use and extreme anxiety, delays between anxiety and depression. memory record, and relevant information for the case of concern. The researchers divided the participants into two groups. Both groups were asked to remember a list of words related to human behavior and other words not related to human behavior. Members of the same group are required to report their behavior to the evaluation committee. The members of the supervisory group also talked about their behavior, but only among themselves in a non-judgmental situation.

Researchers have found that stress in the open causes memory loss and stress-related events — in this case, a series of words related to a person. This is especially true when compared to non-stress-related, inhumane terms such as “mud.” This effect is slightly greater for items concealed during stress, rather than those that are applied after a short delay, although the effect of stress is not significantly different in all delays.

Awareness of the impact of stress on cognition has increased over the past two years, as more people face more complex problems. Studies show that regular or repeated exposure to stress has a detrimental effect on attention span, sleep and memory, and can damage the brain.
