Pedestrian struck, killed on I-5 near University City; northbound lanes closed

A pedestrian was hit and killed Thursday night while walking on a lane on Interstate 5 in the University City area, authorities said.

It happened at about 11:30 p.m. in the north lanes of I-5 near the exit of Genesee Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian – reportedly a woman – was initially reported to be walking on the freeway just minutes before 11:30 p.m., according to a Highway Patrol incident log. A witness told the dispatchers that the pedestrian was walking against the traffic in a middle lane.

Shortly afterwards, Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene and asked for staff from the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

At around 11:45 a.m., police closed all four lanes heading north and began diverting traffic from the freeway to Genesee Avenue, according to the CHP and Caltrans San Diego incident log.

It was not clear when the lanes were expected to reopen.

This is an impressive story that will be updated when more information is available.
