Payton Gendron, Buffalo shooting suspect, may have planned attack months ago; manifesto posted online: authorities

BUFFALO, NY – Authorities say the suspect who fatally shot 10 people and injured three others at a Buffalo supermarket on Saturday traveled hours from another New York county and that the attack may have been planned months earlier.

Wearing a hospital gown, accused Buffalo supermarket shooter Peyton GentronThe 18-year-old from Conklin, New York, was arraigned Saturday night on first-degree murder charges and remanded in custody without bail.

Investigators believe Gendron published a 180-page document on the Internet before the mass attack, which included a detailed plan for the attack and his support for several mass murderers.

The suspect is believed to have written the document based on a theory that whites are being replaced.

“The perpetrator traveled for hours outside this community to commit this crime against Buffalo residents, one day when people were enjoying the sun, enjoying family, enjoying friends,” Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told a news conference. on Saturday afternoon. “People in a supermarket, shopping and spheres are raining down on them. People’s lives are disappearing in an instant for no reason.”

Gendron pleaded not guilty, but could face up to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder. There will likely be more charges at the federal level.

Police officials say Gendron, who is white, was wearing a body shield and military -type clothing when he pulled fire on people in a friendly market, while the shot was transmitted through a camera located in his helmet.

Officials said they were still working to determine how the suspect acquired his weapons.

In a previous interaction with law enforcement, New York’s Broome County police were called in from a local high school last June after reports that Gentron had threatened to shoot him at graduation or during that time, sources confirmed. law enforcement aware of the matter on ABC News. .

State police investigated, no charges were filed and Gendron received a mental health assessment and counseling.

Meanwhile, neighbors of the Gendron family told ABC News that the neighborhood has an almost “Leave-It-to-Beaver-” feeling, and described the family as friendly.

The parents of the suspected gunman, Paul and Pamela Gendron are both engineers and, until recently, their son was studying at the nearby Broom SUNY Community College, hoping to go into the field. A Broom SUNY spokesman confirmed that Gendron was a former student.

At a news conference Saturday, Governor Kathy Hochul sharply criticized “social media platforms” for being hateful and not immediately toppling Gendron’s. live broadcast.

Although he did not name any sites, an official confirmed that he was referring to Twitch, a live streaming site owned by Amazon and popular with gamers.

“The social media platforms that benefit from their existence need to be responsible for monitoring and monitoring, knowing that they can, in a sense, be complicit in a crime like this. Maybe not legally, but morally. They have created the “A platform to launch this hatred,” said Hotsul.

Hotsul also said there was “a fuel frenzy on social media platforms where hatred is more prevalent.”

“This must stop. These media must be more careful in monitoring the content of social media. And certainly, the fact that this act of barbarism, this execution of innocent people, could be broadcast live on social media platforms. “and not to be removed within a second, it tells me that there is a responsibility out there,” the governor added.

Twitch claims to have taken Gendron’s channel offline within two minutes of filming and issued a statement saying:

“We are devastated to learn of the shooting that took place this afternoon in Buffalo, New York. Our hearts are with the community affected by the tragedy. “In all cases, the user has been suspended indefinitely from our service and we take all appropriate action, including monitoring for any accounts that retransmit this content.”

A 2019 shot at a Jewish synagogue in Halle, Germany was also broadcast live on Twitch.

Law enforcement is also considering the Discord messaging platform, where the gunman may have made a list of instructions for himself. Discord was used by white advocates to plan the 2017 Charlottesville, Virginia rally.
