Passengers do nothing as woman is raped on train near Philadelphia, police say

Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania-Police said on Friday that a man was detained because there was no passenger called 911 after raping a woman on a Septam train outside Philadelphia on Wednesday night.

The attack occurred around 10 pm on a westbound train in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. The woman did not know the suspect. The suspect was identified as Fiston M. Goy, 35, and officials said they were known to police. He has been charged with rape, vulgar assault and sexual assault.

In a statement, Septam called the attack a “terrible criminal act” and said police had arrested Goy “in that act.”

Other than condemning the assault, authorities questioned why none of the other passengers seemed to do anything to help the victims. The 911 call came from a SEPTA employee who witnessed an attack from the platform as the train passed.

“In my opinion, there were a lot of people who should have intervened. Someone should have done something,” said Timothy Bernhard, police chief of Upper Darby. “It tells us who we are as a society, that is, who can allow such a thing to happen?”

Investigators said surveillance videos show Goy sitting next to the victim and trying to touch her. The woman can be seen trying to push him away several times.

According to police, the video shows Goy pushing her down, stripping her clothes and sexually assaulting her.

Police said the victim was in shock. The assault lasted eight minutes.

“If the rider called 911, the assault could have been stopped sooner,” Septam said in a statement.

Bernhard called the victim “an incredibly strong woman,” and said she was “under treatment.”

Police said the attack was captured by Septam’s surveillance system. It may have been recorded by someone else on the train.

As of Friday, Ngoy stayed behind the bar on bail of $ 180,000.

SEPTA has issued a statement urging people to call 911 if they observe a crime being committed.
“The rape on Wednesday night (October 13) at Septam’s Market-Frankford Line was a horrific criminal act. The assault was observed by a Septam employee who called 911, and Septam officers responded immediately. However, I was able to arrest the suspect for that act.

Others who witnessed this horrific act were on the train, and if the rider called 911, it could have been stopped earlier. Anyone who witnesses an emergency should call 911 immediately. In non-emergency situations, we recommend using the SEPTA Transit Watch app. If people see what the Septam police think they should know, this allows them to say something quickly and cautiously.

Upper Darby Township Police is leading the rape investigation with the support of Septam Transit Police. Anyone who witnesses the incident will be urged to contact the Upper Darby Township Police. ”
