The Padres made short work of Minnesota on Friday to start the homestand, beating the Twins 10-1.
Blake Snell benefited from the generosity of his teammates, who hit five balls out of Petco Park to help him to his third win of the season. The lefty gave up one run in six innings while striking out seven.
Luke Voit started the offense in the first with a two-run home run, followed by solo homers by Ha-Seong Kim in the second and Eric Hosmer in the fourth.
Already with 4-0, h Padres exploded for six in the fifth inning, with two outs to start. Manny Machado started the scoring with a two-run homer, his 17th, to drive in Kim, who had singled.
Two batters later, Voight doubled in Jake Cronenworth, who had also singled. Eric Hosmer walked, setting up Jorge Alfaro to hit the Friars’ second homer of the inning, a three-run blast.
“Hopefully it’s a sign of something to come,” Melvin said of his team’s rare offensive outburst.
Meanwhile, the team is nearing an agreement with Joe Musgrove to extend his contract, according to MLB.comwhich cited various sources as putting the value of the deal at around $100 million over five years.
The Padres acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the 2021 season.
“I would love to see it,” Melvin said of the reported expansion. “…and so would everyone in that room,” he added of the club.
Musgrove and Sean Manaea are slated to start for the Padres on Saturday and Sunday.
