Osprey military aircraft carrying 5 Marines crashes in Southern California desert

BROWLEY, California (KABC) – A Marine Corps Osprey aircraft carrying five Marines crashed Wednesday in the Southern California desert and civilian and military emergency crews responded, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage.

The plane, an MV-22B Osprey, crashed in a remote area near the town of Glamis in Imperial County, officials said. The army did not release details of the condition of the Marines aboard the ship.

The MV-22B Osprey belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Camp Pendleton and crashed at 12:25 a.m. during training, said Maj Mason Englehart, a spokesman for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing . Miramar, in San Diego

The tiltrotor aircraft can take off and land as a helicopter but pass as a turbocharged aircraft.

The Marines denied the first social media posts claiming that the aircraft was carrying nuclear material.

“There was no nuclear material on board,” the Marines said.

Military and civilian first aid was at the crash site.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
