One of the directors, Byron Howard from Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, is preparing for a huge night that is expected to be for the animated film.
“Encanto” has brought families together around the world and this family theme will continue for the Howards on Sunday night. Howard’s large Italian family will watch the Oscars from their home in the Delaware Valley.
Howard’s life as an animator began at a young age. He says he was a doodler and he liked cartoons.
“I had one of those flip movies like Snoopy … and you go frame-by-frame. And I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Someone painted each of these animated frames,” Howard said.
Fast forward from the days of Byron Howard at Ardmore Avenue Elementary School and now has a 30 year career in animation.
“If I could talk to my 10-year-old self, I would say, ‘Get ready for a fun ride.’ “We have the best job in the world because we carry these films all the way from the very first blank page, the first idea of an idea to see moments like this,” said Howard.
“Encanto” marks the fourth time Howard has directed a Walt Disney Animation Studios animated film. He is known for great hits such as “Tangled” and “Bolt”, which earned him his first Oscar nomination. In 2017 he won for “Zootopia”, which won the award for Best Animated Film.
“I heard the name and I said, ‘Okay, I’m looking to see my teammates like they told us?’
“Encanto” is a worldwide big hit that could earn him a coveted second Oscar.
“Mirabel, in particular, had a very, very early game. This is like five years ago. This stadium included the idea of a young woman in a family of great people who were just as ordinary,” Howard said.
“Encanto” is sweeping the awards season. Next and last stop? The Oscars.
Howard says he is channeling the movie with his red carpet fashion choices.
“We tried to do something like a floral Encanto. I have a kind of floral suit. We don’t dress very often.
“Encanto” is produced by Disney, the parent company of this station.
The 94th Oscars will be broadcast live on ABC on March 27 from 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT / 5 p.m. PT. Hosted by Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes.
