Oscar de la Hoya withdraws from comeback fight after COVID-19 infection

Los Angeles (KABC)-Oscar De La Hoya tests positive for COVID-19 and will not fight Vitor Belfort next weekend.

Delahoya planned to return to the ring in a battle at Staples Center on September 11, after more than a decade away.

But the boxer posted Video to Instagram From the hospital bed, he said he was suffering from a COVID-19 infection despite being vaccinated.

“How likely is it that I get COVID?” He says in a video. “I’ve taken care of myself. This really, really kicked my ass.”

Similarly, former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, who hasn’t fought for 10 years, has agreed to step into Belfort and put him in the box instead.

The fight still needs to be approved by the California Athletic Commission.

If not, the promoter is aiming to move to Florida.
