Organization denies request to boot Russia off the internet

Ukraine has called on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers to prevent Russia from blocking Internet access.

The organization is responsible for overseeing domain name management.

Ukraine has asked ICANN to suspend connections to websites that use .ru, .su and .рф domains and to shut down Internet access in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

This would mean that even ordinary people in Russia would not be able to access their email, search the web, or even access local websites.

In one letterUkraine said, “These measures will help users to find reliable information in alternative domain areas, avoiding propaganda and misinformation.”

The government team denied Ukraine’s request.

ICANN said in a statement: “Our mission is not to take punitive action, impose sanctions or restrict access to Internet segments, regardless of the provocations.”

In addition, “ICANN is built to ensure that the Internet works, not to use its coordinating role to stop it from working.”
