Cyclists gather in memory of Ethan Boyes

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Cyclists in San Francisco held a rally to demand the city install protective bike lanes on Alghero Boulevard. That’s where world champion cyclist Ethan Boys was beaten and killed on Tuesday a week before him.

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition held this rally and ride in honor of the Boyes. They say a protected lane could prevent another tragedy from happening.

Boyes friend James Grady said: About 80 to 100 people have already come. That’s just a few of the people whose lives Ethan touched. “

Grady befriended the Boyes in 2016. They shared a love of cycling.

“Ethan would have ridden this road hundreds, if not thousands of times. He was a top cyclist,” Grady said.

Boyes lived in San Francisco and was hit and killed by a car while riding his bike on Arguello Boulevard as usual. A ghost bike now lies as a memorial.

Before the sun went down on Tuesday, dozens of cyclists gathered to pay tribute to Boyes and raise awareness about the need to make cycling safer.

San Francisco’s Bike Advisory Board has been working for months to get the city to approve a protected bike lane on Alghero Boulevard from Fulton to the Presidio.

The commission has put together a petition, but Christine Teach, vice chair of the San Francisco Bicycle Advisory Board, says the city is not moving forward.

“We don’t have time to wait any longer. Wait a few more months and we’ll see another injury or death to Arguello,” she said.

Ethan’s death was federal land. The Presidio Trust told KRON4 that he has worked hard to improve safety and expand routes for cyclists and pedestrians. On Wednesday, a petition containing 500,000 signatures will be submitted to city supervisors.
