All LA Residents Can Now Put Garbage and Compostable Items in the Green Trash Can – Daily News

LOS ANGELES — The LA Department of Health’s citywide organic matter program began on Monday, when the agency encouraged residents to dispose of food waste and food-stained paper in green bins along with existing yard waste.

The program is part of an effort to comply with Senate Bill 1383, which requires jurisdictions to reduce organic waste disposal from landfills by 75% by 2075.

LA Sanitation has been conducting a pilot program to collect compostable materials from the streets since 2019, expanding from 18,000 homes to 40,000 last summer. The program is now expanding city-wide.

The expansion came after the City Council and Public Works Board awarded a contract with a company to process the compost.

Barbara Romero, Executive Director and General Manager of LASAN, said: “LASAN is committed to diverting food waste from landfills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality throughout Los Angeles.”

Items that can be composted include fruits, vegetables, dairy products, stale bread, and stale meat.

The city also provides residents with kitchen buckets. lacitysan.org/organics.
