Officials ID officers who fired at man in Tierrasanta who later died of self-inflicted gunshot

The three San Diego police officers who shot at a man after allegedly pointing a gun at firefighters and police in Tierrasanda last weekend were identified Thursday.

The shooting took place shortly before noon on Saturday in an apartment complex on Tierrasanta Avenue. Police fired at the man and he ran away to the compound. He was found dead a few hours later from an obvious self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The officers who opened fire were identified by county sheriff’s officers as Cassie Lureret, Jason Langley and Austin Thomas.

Lureret has worked for the San Diego Police Department for 17 years. He is currently assigned to the Cynics Unit. Langley has worked in the department for eight years and has also been appointed to the Cynics Unit. Thomas has been in the department for a year and has been placed in the department’s Eastern Directorate, officials said.

The incident started after someone reported a fire in an apartment in the complex, officials said. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from one of the units and opened the door. Inside a couch was a man with a handgun who aimed his shotgun at firefighters, officials said.

Firefighters retreated and San Diego police responded.

Several police officers were stationed in a corridor when the man came out of his apartment and pointed a pistol at police, officials said. Three of the officers opened fire and the man ran back in and out of his backyard.

Officers who had surrounded the group later heard what sounded like a gunshot wound, officials said. The crew of a police helicopter spotted the man standing motionless on a runway in the complex shortly afterwards.

The identity of the man has not been made known.

This is the first incident in San Diego that falls under a new protocol that ensures that no local department investigates its own police shootings. The new guidelines dictate that the Sheriff’s Department investigate cases involving San Diego police officers.
