Our training club for authors (OASC) and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.. Sigma Sigma Alumni The head of Los Angeles appreciates the community for supporting the annual public speaking competition for 2022. This year’s theme was Black Health and Wellness.

After many weeks of preparation and fierce competition, Olivia Carter, a 10th grader at the University High School Charter, was awarded first place. Carter made a fascinating impact with his touching views on how mental health problems affect African-American teenagers.

Mia Moore10you a classmate from Flintridge Preparatory School, won second place; and the third was Holin Youngand 9you-lass student from Branded Genius Academy. He was also awarded an honorary distinction Hunter Young, and 10you a student who represented Loyola High School.

This year’s competition was a hybrid event in which students competed in person with an audience of parents, judges and committee members. Meanwhile, family and friends watched the race through Zoom. In addition, the famous psychologist Dr. Lauren M. Hill was a surprise guest who reiterated the importance of mental health in the overall spectrum of health and well-being of blacks.

Special thanks to the View Park section of NCNW (National Council of Negro Women) for hosting the event at their historic 3720 W council building. 54you Street in Los Angeles. The President of NCNW Southern California, Dr. Helena Johnson, welcomed.

Newly elected president Lura Daniels-Ball and historian Ernestine “Jen” Gordon The OASC expressed enthusiastic feelings about the legacy of the competition. Gordon noted that the competition was started 67 years ago by the late Vassi D. Wright, a member of Sigma Gamma Rho and founder of OASC.

Sigma Sigma Alumni Chair (Bazilevs) Vanessa Rickmon also present to offer her congratulations. The speaker of the competition is Terry Lions, and the coordinator of the competition is LaRita Shelby.

Our Authors Study Club, Inc. is the local branch of Association for the Study of African Americans Life and History (ASALH)founded in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson.
