Oak Fire: Mariposa County’s 3rd wildfire in 2 weeks explodes to 1,300 acres, forcing evacuations

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — A new wildfire is spreading dangerously fast in Mariposa County, forcing many residents to evacuate.

The Oak Fire broke out just after 2pm on Friday and has already grown to 1,300 acres in less than four hours.

Friday afternoon, the sheriff’s office issued an evacuation order for certain areas due to the Oak Fire.

These areas are:

  • Carstens Rd
  • Buckingham Mt. Rd
  • Plumbar Creek Rd, Triangle from Plumbar to 140
  • Triangle Rd from Hwy 140 to Butterfly Ridge Rd (near Silva rd and Triangle)
  • Triangle Rd (both sides of road) from Hwy 140 to Carter Rd, All of Carter Rd.
  • Jerseydale Rd and all side roads off Jerseydale Rd
  • Hwy 140 from Allred Rd to Ponderosa Way
  • Buckingham Mt. Rd
  • Darrah Rd from Triangle to Valley View
  • Silva Rd from Triangle to Van Ness Rd
  • Residents are asked to leave immediately.

    CAL FIRE crews have arrived in the area and are fighting the flames.

    An evacuation center was initially set up at the New Life Christian Church, but the fire’s dangerously fast spread forced officials to close it.

    The Red Cross has set up a new evacuation center at Mariposa Elementary School. All residents and responders who were at the New Life Christian Church have been moved to the elementary school. Those who arrive at the school will have safe shelter, water, meals and additional resources.

    A large animal evacuation center has also been set up at the Mariposa County Fair Grounds.

    Small animals are welcome at Mariposa Elementary School.

    Nearly 3,000 families are without power in Mariposa County, according to PG&E website.

    This is the third fire in the county in the last two weeks.

    Firefighters are still trying to fully contain it Washburn Fire and Agua Fire.
