Norwegian health authorities said Tuesday that the country has a surplus of COVID-19 vaccines and has already abandoned more than 137,000 doses due to declining demand in low-income countries.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health says it plans to re-vaccinate if global demand does not change. In Norway there is a high immunization coverage while globally the need for donations is declining.

“For the first time during the epidemic, the current supply exceeds the requirements of COVID-19 vaccines“Norway is not a member of the EU.

Norway has donated 7.4 million doses to more than 25 countries, mainly through the UN-sponsored COVAX program but also through donations from both sides.

Earlier this month, health officials in neighboring Denmark says 1.1 million COVID-19 vaccines will be discarded because their expiration date is near, and efforts to deliver them to developing countries have failed.

According to the Norwegian authorities, 93.1% of people over the age of 18 have received the first dose while 90.7% have received the second shot.
