NordVPN Survey Highlights Differences in VPN Usage Patterns Between Users in Hong Kong and Taiwan

Public awareness of VPNs is high in both Hong Kong and Taiwan, but usage patterns differ, according to a current survey under the direction of NordVPN. The VPN provider found that only 22% of Hong Kong respondents could not name a VPN brand, compared to 36% in Taiwan, based on research conducted between January 2021 and February 2022.

However, 41% of respondents in Taiwan said they use it free VPNs mainly to access geo-restricted content, 39% and 38% of Hong Kong respondents said they use VPNs mainly for security and privacy reasons, respectively, according to a press release published on Tuesday citing the research.

VPN usage in Hong Kong surged in response to the national security law Mainland China imposed 2020 on the region, which explains why people in Hong Kong tend to prioritize security and privacy when using a VPN. On the other hand, many VPN users in Taiwan are interested in bypassing regional blocks to access Japanese content such as anime and online game releases, the publication said.
