Donating 40,000 pounds of food to non-profit organizations in SLO County

On Thursday, volunteers from across the county gathered at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Luis Obispo to help distribute 24 pallets of food to county nonprofits.

A large food donation totaling £40,000 was sent from Church headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The church has over 17 million members worldwide. 70,000 missionaries serve their assigned communities for two years at a time. Some of them were part of his 50-person volunteer group in San Luis Obispo on Thursday morning.

The 15 nonprofits that received canned goods in Thursday’s distribution include CAPSLO, People’s Self-Help Housing, Loaves and Fishes, HASLO, Grassroots II, Lumina Alliance, Meals that Connect, and Salvation Army.

Shea Stewart, Executive Director of Granite Ridge Christian Camp, said: “We are working with Cal Poly and his ECHO’s Front Porch and CAPSLO’s 40 Prado to participate in several activities across the community that we help and give back and spend a little time with. It’s just an opportunity to do it.”

In 2022, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints distributed 7.2 million pounds of surplus food to the counties of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles.

“We serve all over the world,” said missionary Keaton Pickrell.
