NEW YORK — Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opened in theaters in the United States and Canada with a huge box office gross of $120.5 million, more than triple the original anime premiere in 2018, earning more than the shows that the box office is growing. It would be the envy of even the most powerful Hollywood movie series.

Sony Pictures’ multiverse Spider-Man spin-off Across the Spider-Verse far exceeded expectations, according to the studio’s estimates on Sunday, garnering excellent reviews (95% new on Rotten Tomatoes) and hot attention. I got on the strong topic that I gathered. The highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

2018’s Into the Spider-Verse bursts with originality into the stereotypical realm of superhero movies, starring teenage webslinger Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) from Brooklyn and punk-rock genius. We introduced Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) and a bunch of other characters. another spiderman. Starting at $35.4 million, worldwide he is on track to reach $384.3 million.

Across the Spider-Verse, an exponential expansion of the movie’s space-flying world, it cost $100 million to make, about half the cost of the average live-action cartoon. So even if “Spider-Verse” was expected to open at $80 million, “Across the Spider-Verse” would have been a hit.

Instead, it was a box office sensation, becoming the second highest-grossing domestic release of 2023, after the Super Mario Bros. movie. Directed by Joaquin Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson, Across the Spider-Verse surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premiered at $118 million and marked the best opening weekend of the summer so far.

Directed by writer-producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film is the second part of a trilogy that concludes with Chapter 3, due out next year. “Across the Spider-Verse” topped the charts overseas with $88.1 million.

After few family-friendly productions for much of the first half of 2023, theaters are suddenly overflowing with entertainment for kids. Walt Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” which topped the list last week, slipped to second place with $40.6 million in its second week of release.

The Little Mermaid drops 57% after opening with $95.5 million and $117.5 million over the four-day weekend of Memorial Day, partly due to stiff competition from Across the Spider-Verse. bottom.

With a reported budget of $250 million, The Little Mermaid received mixed reviews, but was even more enthusiastic by audiences, earning an “A” on CinemaScore. But overseas, where previous Disney live-action remakes have been successful, this one is proving to be more difficult territory. The film added $42.4 million internationally over the weekend.

Disney also became the weekend’s top choice for counterprogramming with “The Boogeyman,” a largely well-received horror adaptation of a Stephen King short story. The Rob Savage-directed $35 million movie starring Sophie Thatcher and Chris Messina was originally slated to debut on Hulu before the studio changed course. Ticket sales opened with $12.3 million.

In limited release, Sundance’s breakout film, “Past Lives,” averaged a staggering $58,067 per screen across four screens. In Celine Song’s directorial debut, Greta Lee plays a woman torn between her childhood friend from South Korea (Taeo Yoo) and her American husband (John Magaro).

Estimated ticket sales Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. Final national statistics will be released on Monday.
