Pasadena (CBSLA) – The historic flight of NASA’s Mars helicopter scheduled for Sunday has been postponed for a few more days due to technical issues.
The 4-pound helicopter Ingenuity was scheduled to fly over the surface of Mars on Sunday. However, the Pasadena-based Jet Propulsion Laboratory tweeted Saturday morning that it had a technical problem during the test and delayed the flight as early as April 14.
“During the fast spin test, the sequence ended early during the transition from’preflight’mode to’flight’ mode,” JPL tweeted. “The helicopter is safe and healthy. The team is diagnosing the problem.”
JPL plans to hover the chopper about 10 feet above the surface of Mars for up to 30 seconds. It marks the first instance of powered flight on another planet.

If the final flight occurs, it will take more than 5 hours for the JPL mission manager to receive the first data from the flight attempt. Helicopter flight is completely autonomous, making it impossible for the distance to Mars to control flight from JPL headquarters.
