A 73-year-old summer tradition in the Naples Islands will return on Saturday, June 4: The Pancake Breakfast.
Although a breakfast of pancakes, sausages, and orange juice is the centerpiece, the summer morning involves much more. There’s a fun run (about 2.7 miles), a craft fair, a plant sale, opportunities to get the iconic Naples pancake breakfast t-shirt, and lots of meetings with locals.
“After a long hiatus, we are happy to be back in action spinning the pancakes and enjoying the camaraderie with our friends and neighbors,” said committee chairman Kim Bergkvist. “This is the year 73 and my eleventh presiding over this precious tradition.”
Like many other things, breakfast went dark in 2020 when COVID-19 ravaged the world and was canceled last year as a precaution. But planning for this year’s event began early and is ahead at full speed, Bergkvist said.
The Colonnade Park, 61 The Naples Island Colonnade, is the center of activity. Breakfast, at $ 10 per person, starts at 7 a.m. with pancakes, sausages, coffee, and juice. Fun race registration starts at 7:45 a.m. and costs $ 5, with the race at 8:30 p.m.
Payment is required in cash or by check for breakfast, T-shirts and the race. Some vendors at the craft fair may carry cards. Checks must be paid to the Naples Improvement Association.
The Naples Islands Garden Club is selling plants and sponsoring the pancake syrup. Jeff Stone will take the coffee, Rich Vaught will take care of the sausage, and Bottoms Up Boat Maintenance will squeeze the orange juice.
Bergkvist said this will be the last year he presides over breakfast. She will hand over the work to Monique Lawee for the 2023 event.
“I poured my heart and soul into this event and it’s time for the folder to pass! Thank you for all the love and support I’ve received over the years,” Bergkvist said in an interview on the NIA website. “Thank you to everyone who donated their time and energy to make breakfast such a precious tradition.”
