Musician AJ Oliveira, uses ‘Find My’ device to locate iPad, track down stolen car and recover $4K worth of stolen music gear

TORRANCE, California – A man from California was forced to find an innovative way to locate his stolen car by pinpointing the location of his iPad, which was inside the car. He then bombed music stores across the area until he recovered stolen equipment worth thousands of dollars.

AJ Oliveira is from Brazil. He moved to Torrance, California with his pregnant wife and two young daughters.

Oliveira says he is a musician and plays to make money for his family. He arrived with his family on April 9. Three days later the unthinkable happened.

Oliveira says a kind friend let him borrow his car and a guitar to start playing, but that Monday night, he parked the car in the closed garage of his apartment after a concert and left the equipment in the car for to put his own. children in bed upstairs.

He was planning to take out the equipment but ended up falling asleep. The next morning, the car was gone.

The equipment in this car was worth more than $ 4,000, according to Oliveira. They also stole his wife’s passport, inside the car. He immediately called the police.

Oliveira examined the surveillance plans of his apartment and found a man and a woman who say they stole the car.

Police and Oliveira were trying to find a way to locate the vehicle.

He said, “Is there a tracking device in the car that we can go to?” And I said, “No, there is no tracking device that I know of” and then I said “oh!” said Oliveira.

Using Apple’s “Find My” feature, Oliveira and detectives were able to track the location of the vehicle in Lawndale, but its equipment was still missing, no longer inside.

Oliveira says he could not just sit and wait, so he called music stores to warn them that his equipment had been stolen and that someone might try to sell it.

He says he contacted the Guitar Center headquarters where he asked about his speaker, which he says is worth more than $ 1,000.

“He said, ‘OK, we have one but it’s in Lawndale.’ “You have to call this store,” he says, Oliveira said.

Oliveira called and found his speaker, which he took back, but warned the store manager that the suspects might try to return and sell the rest of his equipment – and he did.

“Torrance detectives continued their search to identify the suspect and were notified by the Guitar Center later that day that a suspect was trying to sell some more of the stolen music equipment,” the Torrance Police Department told Eyewitness News. . “To help, LASD MPs responded and arrested the potential suspect.”

Officials say that on April 13, detectives were able to link a female detainee suspect to the incident with a stolen car. Torrance police did not identify the suspect, but said he was being held in custody on Grand Theft and Receiving Stolen Property charges.

“I feel awful. I feel paranoid,” Oliveira said. “I feel like it’s a stain on the beautiful picture I had of South Bay and Torrance.”

Oliveira’s determination helped him regain most of his equipment, but his friend’s guitar is still missing. One starts GoFundMe to raise money to return his friend.
