The congregations of an Orange County church are named as heroes after they managed to tie up a gunman who went on a shooting spree Sunday afternoon.
One person was killed and at least five others were injured in what became known as the Laguna Woods Church. Californiaabout 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
Six people in the Geneva Presbyterian Church were hit by gunfire after the shooter, said an Asian man in his 60s, opened fire around 1:25 p.m.
About 40 people witnessed the violence, but those present also helped prevent further bloodshed by overpowering and tying up the shooter, seizing his weapons and holding him until police arrived on the scene.
Police say those involved ‘showed exceptional heroism and courage in apprehending the suspect.’
Two rifles were found near the shooter and were quickly removed.
One of the assailants was fatally injured and died on the spot near the church. Four of the other victims were seriously injured, while a fifth sustained minor injuries.
The majority of the people in the church were believed to be of Taiwanese descent and had gathered to honor a former pastor of the church for whom a lunch reception was held after Sunday morning service.
There was no word on a possible motive for the shooting that took place in Simpson Hall instead of the main auditorium where services are normally held.

Investigators from the FBI, ATF along with Orange County law enforcement policy look at many factors, including whether the attack could have been a hate crime and whether the gun was known to the church community.

The Orange County Fire Authority said it was on scene to treat victims and take a number of people to the hospital shortly before 1:25 p.m., Sunday afternoon. All victims were adults.
The town of 18,000 consists of Laguna Woods Village, a retirement community for people 55 and older formerly known as Leisure World. More than 80% of the city’s residents are at least 65 years old.

Minutes after their initial reports, the department reported that one person had been arrested, and that deputies found guns that may have been involved in the shooting.
Paramedics with the Orange County Fire Authority treated victims at the scene before transporting them to hospitals in the area.
Special agents with the Los Angeles Department of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were also on scene to assist in the investigation.
The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Twitter that he was closely monitoring the situation.
‘No one should be afraid to go to their place of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, the community and all those affected by this tragic event, ‘the tweet said.
“This is disturbing and disturbing news, especially less than a day after a massive shooting in Buffalo,” said U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, whose district includes Laguna Woods. ‘This should not be our new normal. I will work hard to support the victims and their families. ‘
The incident took place in an area with a cluster of houses of worship, including Catholic, Lutheran and Methodist churches and a Jewish synagogue.

Authorities urged the public to avoid the area as El Toro Road was closed between Calle Sonora and Canyon Wren as the investigation continued.
It was at least the second mass shooting of the weekend in the United States, which has been plagued with gun violence in recent years.
Saturday, a white supremacist killed 10 people during a shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo.
Payton Gendron, 18, allegedly shot more than 13 people, the majority of whom were black.
Authorities say they suspect it was a racially motivated attack.
The shooter is also believed to have streamed the disaster live. Gendron pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
He is due to appear in court again on Thursday and is currently on suicide watch.
