1912

Organized at Stockholm, this was just the fifth-ever Summer Olympics. Jim Thorpe flourished his multifaceted abilities as an athlete here. So, he won two gold medals in the decathlon with a record of 8413 points that could not be broken for the next twenty years and the newly formed pentathlon. Based on his overall performance at the 1912 Stockholm Summer Olympics he was considered to be the greatest athlete in the world. However, things did not go all well. In the ensuing years, he would be stripped of the medals. This was particularly sad because he was the first Native-American Olympic gold medalist which is in itself a history. The International Olympic Committee did this due to a questionable amateur status of the player. He was only given these back posthumously in 1982 after the movement to restore his medals had won. 

1960

There was this kid called Cassius Clay who would go on to become the greatest boxer ever on international stage and later embrace Islam. Yes, we are talking about Muhammad Ali who changed his name to erase his identity as a slave forever. He was a pugilist in Kentucky where he grew up and had also won an AAU national championship. However, the 1960 Summer Olympics that took place at Rome was the first international platform where his greatness would be seen and people would start taking him seriously. He had won gold in the light-heavyweight division.

1992

It was the time for the dream team in American Basketball. This star team consisting of stalwarts in the game like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Charles Barkley might have as well won the gold medals much before the onset of the 1992 Summer Olympics. The Americans kept up to everybody’s expectations and were indomitable in every single game. The closest margin of victory was put up by Puerto Rico which was still 38 points. This was in the semifinals. In the finals, they won against Venezuela with 80-47 and won the much awaited gold medals.

2016

Coming to recent times, this was one of the best years for the US in the Rio Olympics both for the outstanding Simone Biles as well as the fourth and final Olympics in which Phelps participated and won 5 gold medals in. With 28 medals, 23 of which are gold, he is the most decorated Olympic athlete in the history of the games.
