Most patients have positive views about AI in medicine

Most patients have a positive view of artificial intelligence (AI) ability to improve care but are concerned about unintended consequences, according to a research paper published online May 4 in JAMA Network Open.

Dhruv Khullar, MD, MPP, from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, and colleagues conducted a study between December 3 and 18, 2019, on the potential of a youth-based, national representative committee to examine public perceptions’ about the use of AI in diagnosis and treatment; 926 participants completed the survey.

The researchers found that most patients believe that AI will health care more or less (10.9 and 44.5 percent, respectively), while few believe AI will. health care less or worse (4.3 and 1.9 percent, respectively); 19% indicated that they did not know. Overall, 66 and 29.8 percent said they were informed if AI played a significant role in the diagnosis or treatment was important and tasteful, respectively. Total 31 and 40.5 percent, respectively, i responders reported being very uncomfortable getting a diagnosis from an AI algorithm that was exactly 90 percent of the time but could not explain its cause. Most respondents were very concerned about the unintended consequences of AI, including lack of diagnosis, breach of privacy, lack of time with doctors, and poor health care (91.5, 70.8, 69.6, and 68.4 percent , in turn).

“Patients can benefit from knowledge about how AI is integrated into care and how doctors rely on AI to help make decisions,” the authors write.

Many authors describe financial relationships with the pharmaceutical, legal, health, and insurance industries.
