More than 500 cars damaged by massive fire at auto facility south of Fresno

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Roads remain closed near a car wreck yard in Fresno County as fire crews continue to investigate what caused a huge fire that damaged hundreds of cars.

The fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a facility on Golden State Boulevard and Maple Avenue, south of the city of Fresno near Malaga.

California Highway Patrol said officers closed Maple Avenue between Golden State and Bagley Avenue. Authorities have also blocked the right lane of Highway 99, which runs south near Central Avenue.

Drivers who normally travel through this area will have to find an alternative route.

The crews managed to reduce the fire, but firefighters were still working to extinguish the hot spots that broke out at night.

The blaze damaged more than 500 cars, officials said.

Many firefighters rushed to the scene to help put out the fire.

A large column of smoke could be seen for miles near Fresno.

Calwa Elementary School had to keep students in the classrooms because of the smoke. School officials told parents that this could happen on Friday as well.
