In 2016, two shows about a girl with supernatural powers came out.
One of them was. The other was a mind-boggling mystery set in a small town with a scientist villain conducting inhumane experiments.
One of these programs is no longer running. And yet, The OA is still the second best TV show to sink into the mines Netflix. The best show is but The OA is not far behind.
The OA is difficult to describe because it sews a handful of different genres into its own ethereal plane. The OA is surreal at times. But instead of floating images that gently bump into each other, the sci-fi here is delivered with the grounded sovereignty of a Christopher Nolan film. It moves with the same relentless power.
Our anchor and main heroine is Prairie Johnson. In the very first scene, Prairie, a young blonde woman, jumps off a bridge. When she wakes up, she’s back home. She had been missing for seven years.
Nobody knows what happened to her. Your return is a miracle. Even more shocking: once blind, she can see again.
Prairie has scars on her back and experiences traumatic episodes, but doesn’t want to burden her adoptive parents with her story. Instead, she goes online and finds like-minded people on YouTube.
From here the story works a little like the mystery in. We don’t know if Prairie is telling the truth to her new friends or not. We don’t know if she really has supernatural powers. For them it doesn’t matter at all. She brings unhappy, trapped people together and shows them the same kindness and understanding that they showed her. show you a way out.
The OA comes from longtime creative team Brit Marling (who also stars as Prairie) and Zal Batmanglij. The show feels like the product of buzzing heads excitedly throwing out idea after idea. As intense as it is dense, the OA explores the human condition, mortality, the afterlife and… the multiverse.
It’s correct. To forget. This is the show to watch if you want a rich, existential look at the interconnectedness of all things. The world of OA is vast and its functioning follows the most unexpected rules.
The OA also doesn’t adhere to a strict television series formula. The opening credits only appear after 57 minutes in the show. It was written like an eight-hour film, with a novel-like approach. You don’t meet some of the main characters for a third of the way.
And season 2 is even better than the first. It becomes a noir detective story set in Silicon Valley, where children, one of whom is played by Zendaya, disappear after participating in a VR game in an app. Season 2 has been shot with a more polished look and is a little less gritty than the character drama of Season 1. There are even attempts at humor – Marling is no stranger to comedy, appearing in community and the British series Babylon.
Occasionally, The OA’s literary voice hits a gem. “Existence is surviving unfair choices,” someone says to Prairie.
So it’s a bit confusing that Netflix canceled the show after two seasons. Somehow, this ambitious, genre-bending tangle of tangled strands is a coherent, life-affirming experience.
It bonds together with realistic, loyal characters bound by their harrowing shared trials. There’s even a believable love story, a touch of warmth amidst the chilling science, cryptic puzzles, and wacky visuals.
Netflix made a mistake cancellation of this show. Many fans believed it was a publicity stunt – there was no way the streamer would stop funding this acclaimed, albeit pricey, series, which was slated for five seasons that differ greatly in style and setting from the previous one.
Surprisingly, the end of the second season almost feels like a finale for the whole series. Still, Marling and Batmanglij hid the real conclusion somewhere. Let’s pray they have the chance to bring Season 3 to the big screen. Someone please jump into the dimensions and rescue this show from the realm of canceled television.
