Moderate associations identified for strabismus, mental health disorders

Strabismus is closely linked with anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, secondary disorders, and anxiety among children, according to a study published online March 10 JAMA Ophthalmology.

Yoon H. Lee, MD, from the University of California at Los Angeles, and colleagues conducted an in-depth study of claim data for 12,005,189 patients enrolled in health system between January 1, 2007, and Dec. 31, 2017. Children under 19 years of age at the time of diagnosis of strabismus include; control of children in the same data with no principles of eye diseases other than misleading errors.

The researchers found that the odds ratio for comorbidities with strabismus was 2.01 (95 percent confidence interval). [CI]1.99 to 2.04), 1.83 (95 percent CI, 1.76 to 1.90), 1.64 (95 percent CI, 1.59 to 1.70), 1.61 (95 percent CI, 1.59 to 1.63), and 0.99, (95.2.2%) for anxiety and depression, schizophrenia, secondary illness, brutality, and intoxication, respectively. Intermediate associations were found between all forms of strabismus and anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression; the incidence varied from 1.23 (95 percent CI, 1.17 to 1.29) to 2.70 (95 percent CI, 2.66 to 2.74) for the association between esoptropia and bipolar disorder and between exotropia and anxiety disorders, respectively.
