Mixed-up sunspot emits powerful solar flare

A jumbled region of sunspots aimed almost directly at Earth has just ejected a major solar flare that could wreak havoc on power grids and communications networks for the next few days.

NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) first discovered the sunspot region designated AR3006 (“AR” stands for “active region”); Now the region is near the center of the Sun’s visible disk.
