Missouri advances bill banning gender-affirming care for minors

The Missouri House has approved a bill that would allow state and local governments to ban doctors and health care professionals from providing gender-based health care if they pass legislation.

“Missouri saves teenagers from experimentation (SURE) Act“It would also prohibit the administration of state or local facilities for the administration of medical treatments that confirm gender, such as puberty blockers or hormone therapies.

The bill states: “Any health care provider who mentions or provides for gender transition procedures for minors may be disciplined by his or her professional licensing committee for unprofessional conduct.”

The SAFE Act would also prohibit the reimbursement of transition procedures for health benefit plans or insurance for persons under 18 years of age.

Lawmakers who support bills like the SAFE Act have said that people will not reach brain maturity until they are 20 years old.

However, a study published in the journal Journal of the American Medical Association Gender affirmation was found to reduce the risk of depression and suicide among people between the ages of 13 and 20.
