Merced Irrigation District in battle with state over water rights

Merced, CA (KFSN)-Local water authorities are encouraging residents to participate in the fight against the state over water rights.

The Shusui Commission held a long meeting on Wednesday to discuss how to proceed with the implementation of the Bay Delta project.

The Merced Irrigation District states that the plan will take up to half of the water supply from Lake McClure in eastern Merced County and send it to the northern Bay Delta.

The State Commission maintains the movement of water from the valleys needed during the drought to combat water shortages in the Delta basin.

However, MID states that the state is stealing supplies and the economic impact will be devastating to the local population.

“We are a seriously disadvantaged community and the water supply held by the Merced Irrigation District for the inhabitants of eastern Merced County is probably the most valuable we have and they are of it. I’m here for, “says John Swayguard, MID General Manager.

The Merced Irrigation District states that Lake McClure, Yosemite, Don Pedro, New Melon, and small reservoirs that supply groundwater recharges to counties and cities will be affected.

This group encourages residents of eastern Merced County to call Governor Newsom.
