A winning $1.28 billion Mega Millions jackpot ticket sold in Illinoisofficials confirmed to ABC News.

Officials go on to say: “Any additional information is pending as Mega Millions completes the balancing process among participating lotteries. Once complete, we will post a release on the Mega Millions website.”

The jackpot was reset to $20 million for Tuesday’s drawing.

There wasn’t just one lucky winner, 26 tickets won the $1 million drawing, according to Mega Millions website. Six of them matched five with the Megaplier for $2 million.

The 20 tickets that won $1 million were sold in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.

Friday’s jackpot was the third largest, behind the $1.5 billion prizes won in 2018 and 2016.

It got so big because there were 29 straight no-wins, a stretch that stretches back to April 15 when a Tennessee player matched all six numbers in the game.

The $1.28 billion prize is for players who are paid with the annuity option, which makes 30 annual payments spread over 29 years. Almost all jackpot winners choose the cash option, which for Friday night’s drawing is estimated at $747.2 million.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are a staggering 1 in 302.5 million.

A second prize ticket with a guaranteed value of $1,000,002 was sold in Bronx, New York.

Tickets with five numbers but missing the Mega number are worth either $1 million or a multiple of $1 million.

The record Mega Millions jackpot is $1.537 billion, won in South Carolina in October 2018 – the world’s largest lottery prize ever won by a single ticket.

The US record jackpot is $1.586 billion for a January 2016 Powerball drawing.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states as well as Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands. The game is overseen by state lottery officials.
