Meet Maverick McNealy, the super-rich golfer and heir to £800m fortune that you have probably never heard of

FORGET Tiger Woods, it’s Maverick McNealy who could claim the richest golfer on the PGA Tour.

By comparison, Woods is believed to be worth around £ 700 million.

Maverick, who has earned £ 1.8 million in his career, also dates American golf star Danielle Kang.

But it’s not her romance that is talking about the golf world, and instead it’s Maverick’s father who’s throwing up the headlines.

Back in 2018, Scott sold the family home – £ 72 million, 20-room Silicon Valley mansion – for sale.

When he found no takers, he reduced £ 36 million of the prize in January last year.

GOLF OF BUSINESS?

Maverick was born in Portola Valley, California, where house prices are among the highest in America and the average income is £ 350,000 per year.

He grew up playing golf, but did not always aim to become a pro. Instead, he expected that follow in his father’s footsteps in business.

In 2018, he graduated from Stanford, one of the major universities in America, with a degree in Management Science and Engineering.

But by that time, his mind was already set on participating in the PGA Tour.

Three years earlier, Maverick had shot 61 in the final round of the Pac-12 Conference Championship, breaking the Stanford 18-hole record held by Tiger Woods and Cameron Wilson.

Maverick is obviously not into it for the money.

He told Golf Digest “My dad often tells me that the most well-funded start-ups always fail, and that a short cash runway lights a fire under your back that is hard to emulate.

“I do not judge my success in golf by how much money I have made; I judge it by my commitment and commitment.”

DAD MADE A MINT

Maverick’s father Scott was even a keen golfer.

In 1982, however, he stepped aside and founded co-founder of computer technology company Sun Microsystems, alongside Vinod Khosla, Bill Joy, and Andy Bechtolsheim.

In 2010, he stepped down as CEO – because the company was sold for an incredible £ 5 billion.

Despite his wealth, however, he made sure that Maverick (and his three other sons) understood the value of money and that they were never spoiled.

Maverick said: “My brothers and I have never received an allowance, and we were told that once we graduated from college, we would have one summer to find a job and then we would be on our own. .

“My dad would have to pay me hair to live at home after school – I’m not kidding!”

FORMER WOULD HAVE BEEN JOUGH

If Maverick had stayed home, it would have cost him a few bobs, as the family home was once valued at £ 72 million.

A 28,000 square foot Palo Alto mansion, it had 20 rooms over four levels.

Inside was a surprising room of 4,700 square feet, which had its own dressing room.

It had its own ice rink, golf course, basketball court, tennis court, climbing wall, swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi.

And for dinner you could sit down in the ‘pizza room’. That’s right, a whole room where you can make pizza.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Although living in a palace would be a dream, Maverick has his own home in Las Vegas, where property is more affordable.

And he lives with LPGA Tour star Danielle Kang, with whom he has been dating since 2019.

Rank 5th in the world, Kang, 28, has already made more than £ 4 million in career earnings.

She’s also not afraid to pass on advice to Maverick, if his game has gone into the pot.

In fact, after a third round of 73 at the Houston Open in 2019, she immediately got on the phone to tell him where he was going wrong.

The next day, he shot a 7-under 65 that included a piece of five consecutive birds.

McNealy will next participate in the USPGA Championship, which begins on May 19th.
