Three days after California Attorney General Rob Bonta held a press conference to announce that an agreement had been reached with the city of Fontana regarding a controversial warehouse project, Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren oversaw a press conference for provide additional information from the point of view of the city.

Last summer, Bonta filed a lawsuit against the city over its approval of a warehouse on Slover and Oleander streets, near Jurupa Hills High School. Bonta said there were concerns about the environmental impact of the project, but Warren disagreed with his assessment.

“First and foremost, your city did nothing wrong,” Warren said during the April 21 event in the Fontana Police Department meeting room. “Duke Realty (the developer) did nothing wrong.”

The solution will allow the project to move forward, but under stricter conditions.

Earlier this year, the City Council passed an ordinance raising standards that must be met by all warehouse developers in the city.

In a press release, the attorney general’s office said April 18: “Today ‘s solution requires the city of Fontana to approve the strictest warehouse ordinance in the state.”

However, Warren said the process of conducting an analysis and eventually approving the ordinance had begun “long before” Bonta’s office filed the lawsuit.

“We were not forced in any way to pass this ordinance,” Warren said.

But a spokesman for Bonta’s office issued the statement on April 22: “The approval of the ordinance was required by the resolution and many of the stricter provisions of the ordinance are what our office specifically requested to be included in the negotiations. Simply put, the Fontana ordinance looks as it does because of the involvement of our office. ”

Bonta said the solution requires Duke Realty to implement new measures to mitigate the environmental impacts of the Slover and Oleander warehouse project on the surrounding community.

Duke Realty will also set up a $ 210,000 community benefit fund to be used to upgrade landscaping reserves at Jurupa Hills High School and to purchase and distribute a five-year supply of high quality air filters up to to 1,750 families in the surrounding community, Bonta said. .

Warren stressed that no funding was given to organizations opposing the stock.

“The city of Fontana refused to participate in a settlement agreement that included payment to any outside special interest group disguised as advocates for this community,” Warren said.

She was apparently referring to the Sierra Club San Gorgonio Chapter, an environmental organization which was represented by Mary Ann Ruiz at the Bonta press conference. Another group, the Coalition of Citizens Concerned by the South Fountain, is based in Fontana and is led by resident Elizabeth Sena.

Bonta said the warehouse is located in a “low-income neighborhood,” but Warren said “we are not an disadvantaged community.”
