Mass. man arrested in carjacking of Amazon delivery vehicle

A man from Massachusetts is in custody in connection with the theft of an Amazon delivery vehicle, according to police. Police in Malden, Massachusetts, about 15 minutes outside downtown Boston, said at about 12:30 p.m. On Thursday, shippers received a call from an Amazon Guide that someone had attempted to steal the delivery vehicle near the intersection of Main Street and Bickford Road. The Amazon driver told police he was out of the vehicle and surrendered when the suspect, identified as 42-year-old Michael Cunha, got into the Amazon vehicle and drove several blocks. Police said that when Cunha got out of the vehicle, he was confronted by an Amazon driver – who called the 911 – and a good Samaritan. The surveillance video shows the good Samaritan trying to stop Cunha and the suspect from slipping and falling to the ground in front of this passer-by. “The good Samaritan, Yose f Tesfaye, told WCVB’s Emily Maher that he was at his family’s Habesha restaurant when he saw a commotion outside.” Then I see the Amazon guy running down and saying, ‘This is the thief. “This is the thief,” Tesfaye said. “I ran after him and he went (from the other side). (Others) were just trying to stop him on the other side and he just came back to me. “When Cunha tripped on the ground, they saw a lot of objects falling. Tesfaye said a knife was among those objects. He had a knife. “I saw the knife after we threw it and I saw the knife on the ground,” said Tesfagie. Cunha finally managed to dodge the Amazon driver and the good Samaritan and flee the scene. investigation which lasted about 40 minutes. “We are grateful that the delivery driver is safe and has not been injured during this incident. “We will continue to work with local law enforcement during their investigation,” Amazon said in a statement. Police said Cunha would be tried on Friday.

The good Samaritan Yosef Tesfaye told WCVB Emily Maher that he was at his family’s Habesha restaurant when he saw a commotion outside.

“Then I see the Amazon guy running downstairs saying, ‘This is the thief.’ This is the thief, “said Tesfaye.” I ran after him and he went (the other way). “(Others) were just trying to block him from the other side and he just came back to me.”

When Cunha trips on the ground, he seems to be throwing a lot of objects. Tesfaye said a knife was among those items.

“He had a knife. I saw the knife after we threw it and I saw the knife on the ground,” Tesfaye said.

The suspect then appears to be getting back on his feet before trying to escape the scene again. That’s when the Amazon driver tackles the suspect on the ground.

Cunha finally managed to avoid the Amazon driver and the good Samaritan and leave the scene.

Malden patrol officers and K-9 units were able to locate Cunha and arrest him after a search that lasted about 40 minutes.

“We are grateful that the delivery driver is safe and has not been injured during this incident. “We will continue to work with local law enforcement authorities during their investigation,” Amazon said in a statement.

Police said Cunha would be taken away on Friday. It is not clear exactly what charges Cunha is currently facing.
