March for Our Lives protests LIVE — Thousands expected to rally against gun violence in the wake of mass shootings in US

Thousands of people are expected to look around the country on Saturday to demand stricter gun control measures in the wake of several horrific shootings this year.

According to a permit obtained by the National Park Service, the event begins this afternoon near the Washington Monument in Washington DC.

Organizers estimate up to 50,000 people attend, the Washington Post reported.

Hundreds of sister marches and rallies will take place around the country, including in New York City, Milwaukee, Orlando and Los Angeles.

The plea for action comes after a shooter opened fire at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, 19 students and two teachers killed.

In another shooting in Buffalo, New York, a shooter the fire opened in a bakerykilled 10 people, all were Black.

There have also been recent mass shootings at a Tulsa hospital and a concrete molding business in Smithsburg, Marylandboth killed and wounded multiple people.

  • Who will speak at the rally?

    March for Our Lives co-founders David Hogg and X González, who survived the Parkland massacre; the son of a victim in the recent Buffalo supermarket shooting; Rep Cori Bush; Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers; and Yolanda King, the grandson of Martin Luther King Jr., will speak at the DC protest, according to the Washington Post.

  • Call for action in Congress

    Survivors of mass shootings and other acts of gunfire have this week witnessed and lobbied senators on Capitol Hill.

    Miah Cerrillo, an 11-year-old girl who survived the Robb Elementary School shooting party in Uvalde, Texaswas one of them, per AP News.

    She told lawmakers how to protect themselves from harm by smearing themselves with the blood of a deceased classmate.

  • ‘Right now we’re angry’

    With another run of horrific shootings reviving the national debate on gun control, organizers of this weekend’s activities believe it’s time to launch their campaign for a national revision.

    “Right now, we’re angry,” said Mariah Cooley, a board member of March For Our Lives and a senior at Howard University in Washington. AP News.

    “This will be a demonstration to show that we as Americans do not stop soon until Congress does its job. And if not, we will vote for them.”

  • Parkland Shooting and March for Our Lives

    The first march was sparked by the deaths of 14 students and three staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018.

    After the shooting, the March For Our Lives campaign was formed under the leadership of youth, who successfully pushed the Republican state legislature of the state of Florida to enforce comprehensive gun control laws.

    The Parkland students then launched March for Our Lives and held a major event in Washington on March 24, 2018, to protest against gun laws in other states and around the country, per AP News.

    This second demonstration of March for Our Lives is expected to gather about 50,000 people to the Washington Monument, according to organizers, according to organizers. AP News.

    March for Our Lives, the organization created by student survivors of the Parkland, Florida high school massacre in 2018, said last month Washington Post that it will hold a protest on June 11 to encourage people to pressure Congress to pass federal gun laws.
