Man to stand trial in fatal shooting of ex-girlfriend’s twin daughters in Lemon Grove

A man accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s twin daughters in Lemon Grove was ordered to stand trial on Tuesday for murder and other charges.

Dwayne Edward Groves Jr., 40, is charged deadly shots 15-year-old Caira Rachel Christopher and Leah Sylvania Christopher around noon on April 15, 2020, at their home on Central Avenue.

The girls’ mother and her other children were at home at the time, but managed to escape.

Groves faces two counts of murder, with multiple counts of murder, meaning he could face the death penalty or life without parole if convicted. He is also charged with assault with a semi-automatic weapon, burglary, shooting at an occupied house, child abuse and possession of a firearm.

In his appeal to El Cajon Supreme Court, Deputy Attorney General Meredith Pro claimed that shortly before Groves arrived home, he called his ex-girlfriend and told her “he understood everything and had a plan”, although he did not. you know what he meant.

Prosecutors say Groves first fired a shot through a sliding glass door before entering the house and firing deadly. both victims, who was a sophomore at Helix Charter High School.

The sheriff’s deputies searched the area with the help of a patrol helicopter and found Groves hiding in a backyard a few houses away from the scene of the shooting, according to sheriff’s lieutenant Tom Siver.

Groves remains in custody without bail.
