Man struck, killed on Encinitas road after stopping to pick wildflowers

A 70-year-old man was fatally beaten on an Encinitas street shortly after he stopped picking wildflowers on Mother’s Day, sheriff officials said.

The accident happened around 4 in the afternoon on Piraeus Street near Normandias Street.

The man was a passenger of a vehicle that was heading south before the sergeant sergeant stopped on a bicycle road in Piraeus. said William Clem. The man then got out of the vehicle and crossed the street to pick flowers.

As he was returning to the stopped car, the man was hit by a vehicle heading north, Clem said. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries and later died. It was not recognized.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have been involved in the accident. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call the traffic department at Encinitas at (760) 966-3500.
