Man Stabbed Early Tuesday at Terminal 3 Baggage Claim at SFO

A man was stabbed to death just before 5 a.m. in the baggage claim area of San Francisco International Airport’s Terminal 3, and police now have a suspect in custody.

Details are few, but at a time when SFO’s baggage claim areas likely saw very little inbound passenger traffic, police were called to the scene at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday and found a man suffering from multiple non-life-threatening stab wounds .

A suspect, it appears, was quickly identified and arrested, and the victim was taken to hospital and is expected to survive.

“Officials were able to locate and arrest an adult male in connection with the investigation,” said SFPD spokesman Officer Robert Rueca. in conversation with KRON4. “Officials have secured the site where the incident occurred and are processing it for evidence. This is an active investigation. There is no threat to the public at this time and airport flights are unaffected.”

A KRON4 reporter, Sara Stinson, was at the airport just before 7am today covering the ongoing problems with flight delays and cancellations when she learned of the stabbing.

ABC 7 reports on the SFPD that neither the victim nor the suspect were travelers – suggesting the likelihood they could have been homeless people who were sleeping or staying at the airport at that hour. In recent years, the airport has reported a trend of more homeless people landing at the airport in the early hours after BART trains ride when BART closes around midnight.

2017 a SFPD officer was stabbed by a person at SFO’s Terminal 1 after responding to a complaint about a homeless man acting suspiciously in the terminal.

Anyone with information about the stabbing is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or send a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.”
