Man sentenced for non-injury pipe bomb explosion at Kearny Mesa hotel –

SAN DIEGO (KUSHI) – One of two men who planted a pipe bomb that exploded at a Kearny Mesa hotel earlier this year but caused no injuries was sentenced Monday to two years behind bars.

Grover Preston Everett, 39, and Hans Juergen Sarda, 30, pleaded guilty to recklessly or maliciously possessing a destructive device to place an explosive on the second floor of the Four Points by Sheraton.

The device detonated on the morning of February 24, although it caused no injuries and only minor damage to the hotel.

On Monday, Sarda was sentenced to two years in local confinement rather than state prison. Everett was also scheduled to be sentenced to two years in prison Monday, but could not be brought to court because he was in medical isolation at the county jail. Everett is scheduled to be sentenced next week.

According to Deputy District Attorney Christina Eastman, the device that exploded was a threaded steel tube containing powder-activated charges. It was placed near a pair of vending machines, where it went off minutes after Everett and Sarda left the hotel.

Police and prosecutors have not disclosed a suspected motive for the bombing.

SDPD Lt. Adam Sharki said information from the public led investigators to the suspects, who were arrested about a week after the explosion.
